Car accident injuries and the recovery process

The reality of driving on the roads of Illinois is that you run the risk of getting involved in a car crash. Every day in the United States, 7,000 people are involved in some type of automobile accident. The injuries that result from these crashes can range from a few minor scrapes to very serious back injuries. The following includes some of the serious injuries that result from a car crash and their recovery periods.

Injuries to the head and brain

When drivers impact another car at high speed, they are much more likely to suffer from brain or head injuries. These are often caused because of the sudden impact on the windshield, roof or side window. The result of this type of impact to the head would usually be a concussion. Although most people don’t feel the effects of a concussion right away, they will after a few hours. Some of the symptoms include nausea, dizziness and headaches. The treatment for a concussion, if it’s not severe, is to simply take some time off and rest as much as possible.

Injury to the neck

Perhaps the most common injury that is sustained in a car crash is whiplash. Whiplash, which can occur no matter the driver’s speed, happens when a person’s head is suddenly jolted to either the front or back. This can lead to something as minor as neck pain for a few days or as serious as the dislocation of a vertebra. Often, these types of accidents are caused because of poor lighting or a distracted driver. The treatment for whiplash can range from taking it easy for a few weeks to having to go in for neck surgery.

Being involved in a car accident can be a very traumatic experience for anyone. Although you should always seek medical attention first, you may also think about seeking legal counsel to ensure that you are compensated fairly.
